Modernist Primitivism our humanity took us in the wrong direction. Our modernism, our concept of utopian society, city life, progression removes us so far from our virtues. I am being removed from my self being filled with so many things that cloud my mind distracting me from a path placed before me by an unseen and often neglected hand. I have come to see the reverse of tolerance. People tolerate the things they choose to. Through toleration we come to find appreciation in our separateness in the way that we stand out, unique individuals amongst a sea of similarity. Perhaps our toleration stems from our own desire to be excepted and to become anonymous but to fit into our niche to be respected. The twist is the darkness ever present picking at our thoughts changing our perspectives, chasing out of our heads the innocence of being separate from the beast which compels us to be how it sees fittest or the most desirable. Note here that i must use words like darkness and beast to represent this something that is not modernism but is coupled with it, intermingled, sinking in its tenticles and infusing itself in a parasitic way into the host of positive spirit and human energy. The big city comes with a view of itself based on values created to perpetuate the mass. The metropolitan comes complete in chic. Well tailored and carrying itself in an aristocratic way. The wisdom generated by the harshness of this soulless and blause environment gives this particular human power (at least in thought) over its "dumber" less educated parrallel which I am going to here label as 'Savages." Its important to keep the gears cranking and turning this is propagated by the media which is suppllied to build an entire economic system on falsity. We can all see it. Actually, I am afraid that all we cannot see it. There is a calvinist idea that basically the whole John Calvin movement centered around which was predestination. Some humans are meant to be saved and some are meant to burn its the separating of chaf from grain. It sometimes seems so apparent. In Isaiah around chapter forty-three it talks about the good of the servant who is able to see and is bothered by those who proudly wear their veils with closed eyes moving in unison and chattering imitations of wisdom. They chop down a tree which has lived for years. They make lumber from it and build a fire then praise the fire for the warmth it provides then taking silver and gold from the earth they melt it in the fire and shape it in the form of a human(reality we shape it into Mcdonalds signs and concrete and little peices of colored paper. Its always been about replacing God thats the whole point of humanism, to deify ourselves or our creation. We want control of the thing controlling everything the further we evolve the more we build the fewer baby steps still remain between us and the prospect set by the serpent in the Garden of Eden that if we would eat from this tree of knowledge then we could become like him. So after that religious bird walk, If you are trying to figure out how this is relevant to modernist primitivism then please proceed to room g 604. Gauguin leaves for Tahiti in 1891. In the jungle City culture is only a by product of the western idea of conquest and claiming possessions which i guess originated in Egypt thousands of years ago. So follow me in a modern world the only thing left or even vaguely important is to possess the game is to possess more than the person standing beside you. Realistically the city life forces this standard upon you with the exception of those who refuse the concept of this ever expanding mass of concrete always forcing the "less sophisticated savage ever to the outskirts to carve out the next piece of gold which once discovered will serve as grounds for the next rape of the natural world to create space for our ever feeding parasitic virtual modern world. setting yourself apart from this world is met with the highest of opposition but unlike the self or God ordained opposition to take part in the world. Worldliness calls and nature yields. The intrigue of primitivism lies in its separation from any system resembling control. Its almost a desire for anarchy, a desire to be truly free to live life in any way that one feels compelled to partake of. To be an artist one cannot allow themselves to be caught up in the flow. The savage is an individual, savages are individuals relying on each other for protection, safety, food, shelter, all the things that modern society claims to hand out to you as long as you have some way of obtaining possesions which serve to perpetuate the system. The Savage's system contains no way of feeding a beast such as the city. The savages system relies only on the ability to be small, moveable and adaptable. The City situation is about duration about lasting about growing roots about using the right amount of recourse to jump start a self sustaining environment. everyday for the Savage may be his last this gives a perspective on the importance of every moment of every meal, every action every conversation. The non savage holds no desire for life on that level he drifts through life following signs that say stop go failure to respect the cold rigid line of these signs will result in an unfavorable end. While the savage seeks, explores, and struggles the metropolitan goes through motions performs mundane tasks to perpetuate the system which in return feeds the individuals need for temporary escape from the system he helped create. So why does the soul disappear in the metropolitan system. Is it the Dollar sign that eats it. is it that search for personal identity in the statistic sea. Is it the repetitive tasks is it propaganda posing as guide posts to freedom. I have to dive back into religion here. When Jesus Christ walked and taught his message was rebellious it went against the structure of the Romans and of Jewish tradition it was about separating yourself from that beast. His message was savage it was about living life in the best way you could not blindly excepting what ever was thrown your direction. Christianity fell victim to the same curse and merged with the ideals of the Roman empire, The apposing beast it found its way to incorporate and destroy the soul. as it does any system that comes in contact with the mass. Christianity was used as a tool of control taken out of context and used without relevance to the text to control an illiterate society. hat was a lifestyle became a cog, a gear wheel in the system. This is more relevant to class, When Primitive art is introduced, this concept of an untamed world was allowed to sneak into the imagination. It turned heads averted attention it was me with opposition riots it was unexceptable maybe even revolutionary Unchecked it could have brought the created world to its knees then the beast quickly seized its opportunity and swallowed the savage plundered it, squeezed it like a wash rag until every drop of its life was gone. Then they sold cups for a penny a piece and society obliged saying yes I will have a sip. And when the world had drank from the cup the rush of the spirit no longer held sweetness but instead tasted bitter. But the hope of possibility exists that there is something free out there there is adventure there is possibility, that there still exists something of the idea of a circle of life. That maybe having control is less important to being in control than not having control forcing oneself into the situation of surviving. I want to leave with this thought modern is now, life is passing by. The times i have spent in mountains trying to find what has been beat out of me by the city is never long enough. Its like allowing a callous to wear away. One of my friends who moved out of our small town into Dallas introduced me to the analogy of the big city callous. It's the blause attitude if one wants to use big fancy french terms. Growth happens on more than just one level, there are are many ways to gage the worth of a person. The metropolitan man is no better person than the man from the small town. The man from the small town has infinitely more soul and love to tap from. Cities deal in dollars and cents you get what you pay for, sometimes you get screwed. In my ideal you have a community, small, interconnecting, you build a family with those that surround you, the good of one is the good of all and at the end of the day you eat or you go hungry and you all do it together. Ayn Rand leaves this senario as taboo due to moochers and others that refuse to pull their weight. Yet in the end of Atlas Shrugged She ends up in this small community of equally driven individuals. The city is cold and slicing seems more savage than savage to me. Utopia will not exist as long as people do. So buy an uzi and start mowing. Better days are ahead.

However to conform in this river washing over me I will say the quote i take from this and warp into my own context is: "the individual in his intellectual development follows the growth of this spirit very imperfectly and at an ever increasing distance." anger is oozing out of me from every pore I fucking hate this guy and his ideals and the subject matter and metropolis. I hate LA and all the fucking cars and traffic. I hate the way that everybody is somebody and its all about which circle you are in and who you "know". fuck simmel and fuck all metropolitan males for thinking they are more intelectual than those who lead simple lives in small towns. fuck the way that they develop and develop and choke out the life of what God designed. Always and eternally they try to replace him. with smog atmospheres and concrete. And then they try to take it back to nature" you know, green it up a little." Overdeveloped suburbs with uncohesive plant life. A big tenticled cluster of city monster leaving these little escapes that they charge 7 bucks so that you can park and see it. "hey this is what it would look like if we weren't here." So smart but soulless their spirits fade they see the world in gray they are just like me and then again not at all how do you stand out when their are a million others trying to stand out too? every one has their little specialized thing that they do. every one avoids eye contact unless they think their is some in for them some way that they can get ahead. Personal gain in the form of wealth at the sake of the whole world I think Simmel said something like that. inward individualization is farce, some kind of attempt to reclaim a humanity that got lost somewhere along the way. Kindness, friendliness, LOVE, wisked away like depleated recources, but no body bitches about a president trying to restore these. there's this bjork song that says "i can obey all of your rules and still be me" what choice do you have its that or death by firing squad there is a question of good and evill that exists and is to often neglected and shaped colored you may say by personal gains and perspective. we live in a make beleive culture driven by people telling us wrong and right and all these different sources feeding into the brain drive one insane. I guess thats where the blase attitude comes in this protective shell to remove feeling and all the things that make a small town work. you see with a small town everyone is interconnected everyone can rely on others and you don't need clocks to make the world go round you don't need clogs you don't need gain... idealistic bullshit... that kind of town doesn't exist that kind of community consumerism destroyed it the whole western european we are better than everything else adopt our ways cease to be heathens or we'll kill you. i'm really angry i think i am going to go hide in my luxury condo now and watch some TV until I am ready to go to sleep and get up tommorow to make money so that i can exist until i die. just remember there is no higher purpose to serve there is no spirit joy is wealth and life is work someday you will die (don't be stupid and think that you may have a soul that will transcend, you are just your thoughts and when you die your brain is gone too) and the system will recycle your remains in a big plot of land and keep moving on eventually the economy will need space, buy the cemetary and build a strip mall on top of it and your rotting carcass Tool said it best (and i apoligize to leave you with the F word but everyone should be immune to it anyway) this is a summation of desires and dreams in the title track ®nima some say the end is near some say well see armagedon soon i certainly hope we will i sure could use a vacation from this bullshit three ring circus side show of freaks here in this hopless fucking hole we call la the only way to fix it is to flush it all away any fuckin time any fuckin day learn to swim ill see you down in arizona bay fret for your figure and fret for your latte and fret for your lawsuit and fret for your hairpeice and fret for your prozac and fret for your pilate and fret for your contract and fret for your car some say a comet will fall from the sky followed by meteor showers and tidal waves followed by faultlines that cannot sit still followed by billions of dumbfounded dipshits and some say the end is near some say well see armagedon soon i certainly hope we will i sure could use a vacation from this stupid shit, silly shit one great big festering neon distraction i've a suggestion to keep you all occupied learn to swim moms gonna fix it all soon moms comin round to put it back the way it ought to be learn to swim fuck L.Ron Hubbard and fuck all his clones fuck all these gun-toting hip gangster wannabes Learn to swim. I can't imagine why you wouldn't Welcome any change, my friend. I wanna see it all come down. suck it down. flush it down. here it seems appropriate to place the february 16 in journal assignment of course i hate the city i want a cabin in the woods with river running with clean water, no pollution, daily hikes, billions less cars, communities that support each other in ways other than monetarily. I want mountains not littered with houses that all look identical to each other. I want trees i want the asymmetry and complexity and chaos of nature as opposed to the hard strait lines that Parisian reform found so appealing. I despise the machine, i despise that people allow it to tell them what to enjoy and what to think. I hate television because of its brainwashing and mind control. Some times I respect terrorism for the beast they are battling. Not so much their tactics but the reasons. how are mordern revolutionists any less noble than those that created the world that we live in and respect so much. Sadness is when we try to return to something pure, natural, unadulterated, "indigenous" and then the beast figures out its something we long for and construct a way to mass produce it and resell it at twice the price and quantity over takes quality it becomes fashion and then fad and the beauty is lost, the gold is replaced by spray painted wood and the black tar oozing from within is unstoppable and will devour this entire planet eventually. there is no way to stop this "progress", our way of replacing God... I can't write more about it without repeating myself

In-journal assignment February 23, 2005 Dearest Virginia, a copy of your book Haunted house and other short stories sits beside me as i stare out across the mountains here in Switzerland in peace while the rest of the world crumbles to hell. Your story solid objects reminded me of Picasso seeking out objects maybe not peices of china and polished glass but something in there gave me a sense of his found art collages. maybe it was the collector, maybe it was the visuals that I saw as the outskirts of paris where he would search for somthing that could not surpass the last thing that enthralled him. the Politics made me draw back to the terror in occurance right now. woe that France has become the haunted house and where gardens once grew the boards have lost their paint and windows are now empty the light that was once eminating from inside has faded. Its twilight now someday i will return will Paris ever be as i left it. thank you for being a writer your soul is that of a guardian angel guiding me home to memories of yesteryear. thank you your biggest fan an artist... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2/9/05 Boudalaire to Zimmel paris reform urban landscape crouds - this book and madam bovarie or somthing are considered the first modernist novel( note that modernist is lowercase) issues of consumerism, mental life and mental health, and the notion in modernist design, and the way that the interior of the home is to be designed as stalled narrative oscar wild the british playwrite said its the strangest book i ever read" decadence generally refers to writers of the 1800s the decedent poet as a dandy culturally related to the flaneur dandy - a hipster - a new aristocratic character - established on how cool you are on what you wear, or other external signs their distinction from the common crowd and the only way that you can do that is on the outside dandys are defined by the act of consumption some one say des esseintes -the dandy is not a dreamy individual because their desire must be presented on the outside he is blase shifting tired of sex fuck propper so this loaded little rich fuck is an obsessive interiior designer , a sickly antique and rare book and scent collector so you got to have money to buy it cause he's got elite tastes with these fantasy rooms his consumerist tastes are different than all these little fashionable twats confined to their mass tastes so this guy is the weird spirittualist shopper who gets sent to exotic places by his objects he doesn't do it to show off he does it to why is the object so important to forming the identity his imaginary life and memories are in these objects which he constantly rearanges he becomes the purist consumer most buy pretencious junk to show off how great they are but this guy has no social life instead he uses the objects to replace the value of human beings the novel proceeds and the suburanites world (his house) called fontenie begins to take his life and vitality from the hero the interior becomes more animated and the hero, simmels blause becomes freuds hysterical woman lifeless and sicker and sicker and sicker illogical anxious on the way to a nearvous breakdown. neurasthenia is what it was called he builds this constantly changing world fair simulating the experience of a wi=orlds fair exibit his dinig room is designed as a underwater ship artificial simulations to stimulate his halluciantions he is using special effects but every illusion quickly becomes a disalusion splendedic boredom we crave nature is an illusion their is nothing healthy in the world how to find fullfillment in a world where is a failing illusion what you hold on to trying to save yourself and your dying ideal call in a nervous specialist who tells him to change his lifestyle and to move back to paris and become a part of society but he has a better idea an ascetic lifestyle i could move to a monestary but it to has been jaded by the beast but ends up moving back to the city significant quisman and others went to the monastary religion becomes the solution for many modernists || ===== || || you could stop there makes a lot of sense archetecture the victorian bulky big dramatic furniture borrowing Style which is capitalized for this period replacing styleness gothic renisance gestantkunstwerk- total art work -
